Self-reflection, curiosity, and humility allow us learn valuable lessons and provide better services to the families that depend on us. Through many roles in the last 50 years (teacher, lawyer, mediator, consultant, professor, and trainer) I have realized how an apology can rebuild a relationship (or make it worse), how cultural differences can create misunderstandings of how best to help children, how a process (if flexible) can solve many problems (but if inflexible, can create more problems), and while there is comfort and stability in our knowledge and expertise, it is easy to fall victim to both status quo and confirmation biases. Having a “growth curve” mentality encourages flexibility to adapt and customize as we move forward.
