Dr. McCarthy completed his doctorate in school psychology at the University of Connecticut, including fellowship through the Maternal and Child Health Bureau Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (MCH LEND) grant at the A. J. Pappanikou Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

Dr. McCarthy began his professional career in Greenwich (CT) as a school psychologist and later as Program Associate of the Psychology Department.  Currently, Dr. McCarthy is Director, K-12, for Special Education and Student Services for the Darien Public Schools (CT).  In addition, Dr. McCarthy holds adjunct faculty positions at Fordham University and Fairfield University, training graduate students of school psychology and special education.  Dr. McCarthy’s academic work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals and his scholarly papers have been presented at both local and national conferences. 

Dr. McCarthy’s work has been recognized through various honors, including being named an Exemplary Early Career School Psychologist by The National Association of School Psychology (NASP), and receiving both the 2016 University of Connecticut Neag School of Education’s Outstanding Early Career Professional Award and two University of Connecticut Dissertation Fellowship Awards.  Dr. McCarthy sits on the Fairfield University Educational Studies and Teacher Preparation Advisory Board and is Chair of the Junior Board of Advisors for The Family and Children’s Agency of Fairfield County, CT.
