Seeing the Same Thing in New Ways: Adopting a Multi-Perspective Approach to Inform your Practice

Conflict is rarely one-dimensional. The perspectives of the parties, the mediator, and the broader context all shape how disputes are understood and how resolution is pursued. A multi-perspective approach invites mediators to examine conflict through different theoretical lenses and practical frameworks, expanding both insight and effectiveness. This workshop explores how adopting multiple perspectives can deepen understanding, reduce blind spots, and enrich mediation practice. Drawing on diverse conflict resolution models and interdisciplinary insights, participants will: analyze the same conflict scenario through contrasting theoretical and practice-based lenses; Recognize how perspective-taking influences process design, party engagement, and outcomes; develop strategies to intentionally shift perspectives in real time during mediation; and strengthen adaptability and professional judgment by integrating multiple viewpoints into practice. Through case analysis, reflective exercises, and facilitated discussion, the session highlights perspective-taking as a critical skill for mediators seeking to navigate complexity with nuance, creativity, and integrity.
