Facilitating Large Groups: Strategies for Managing Complexity and Conflict

Facilitating large groups presents unique challenges—ranging from balancing multiple voices and perspectives to maintaining focus and momentum when discussions become tense or unproductive. This workshop provides participants with practical strategies to manage group dynamics, encourage meaningful participation, and maintain boundaries while guiding large, often diverse, groups toward constructive outcomes. Special attention will be given to high-conflict situations, where emotions run strong, issues are deeply entrenched, and group members may struggle to find common ground. Participants will explore techniques for de-escalation, structured dialogue, and conflict management that allow facilitators to keep discussions respectful, on track, and solution-focused. Participants will learn strategies for preparing for and structuring large group processes; balancing inclusivity with efficiency in discussions; encouraging participation from quieter voices; recognizing and addressing escalating conflict; maintaining leadership, boundaries, and one’s credibility as facilitator, and keeping the group focused on goals and outcomes. By the end of this workshop, participants will be equipped with a toolkit of facilitation techniques for managing large and high-conflict groups. They will gain confidence in creating inclusive environments, navigating intense dynamics, and ensuring that even challenging discussions move toward positive, constructive resolutions.
