Addressing Special Education Disputes: A Systems-Based Approach to Collaborative Conflict Resolution

Disputes in special education are inherently complex, shaped by the intersection of legal requirements, interpersonal dynamics, resources, and the diverse needs of individual students. Traditional, short-term solutions often fail to address the deeper, systemic issues underlying these conflicts. In this session, we’ll explore how a systems-based approach to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) can transform how we address disagreements in special education. By applying systems thinking, we can shift from reactive, fragmented responses to proactive, collaborative strategies that promote sustainable, student-centered outcomes. Attendees will leave the session with concrete strategies and a deeper understanding of how to use systems thinking to prevent and resolve special education disputes in ways that build stronger, more inclusive educational communities
